Fire Safety Engineering – Villa Contarini in Piazzola sul Brenta (Padua)

A large sixteenth-century villa used as a museum, one of the leading facilities on the cultural scene of north-east Italy.

The challenge presented here was to exploit the potential of the building to full, in all its functions, by adopting effective fire safety engineering solutions.

Villa Contarini was built over the remains of an earlier castle, built around 1000. The villa has been extended over the years into the palace-like construction it is today, a splendidly theatrical setting. Purchased in 2005 by the Veneto Region, today it is home to the Fondazione G.E. Girardi and is one of the main benchmark facilities in the north-east for culture, leisure time and the promotion of businesses and the institutions.

The Veneto Region, actively committed to enhancing and protecting the historical and monumental heritage of the Villa in Piazzola, requested a specific project, using F.S.E. to ensure compliance with the measures imposed by an earlier report on fire safety and with the restrictions imposed both by the Superintendence office and by the nature of the building itself.

The results obtained thanks to the performance methods adopted and the studies carried out on the building have shown that the original layout of the building is compatible with the purposes it is to be used for and the full range of functions to be carried out.
